Building a Thatch Roof House with Hand Tools: Bushcraft Saxon Shelter (PART 12)

    διάρκεια: 35:12

We're in the woods building a bushcraft saxon house using hand tools. In part 12 we use an auger and hand drill to build the door, we then use long straw or combed straw to cap the ridge on the top of the thatch roof of the saxon shelter. The combed straw is called "triticale" and is a mix of wheat and rye. The reason we used it to build the top of the roof is because it is much more pliable and easy to bend then water reed. It also has the disease resistance of wheat and the hardiness of rye, which makes it last longer on the roof. To finish off the roof, I used a barrel eye scotch auger and some hand carved wood pegs to fix some cross supports to the top of the thatch roof. This will help pin down the ash liggers (battens) and keep the thatch pinned down during heavy rain and wind. We finish the clay walls inside, using the wattle and daub technique. The Saxon House is now pretty much finished. We have tried to keep it as historically correct as we could. But for things such as the door, we used recycled pallet wood and iron hinges. The reason we did this is because we wanted the door to last and not rot away. It has been an incredible experience building with hand tools. Working with nature to create an ancient home of our ancestors. The Anglo Saxons were very resourceful and would have used whatever natural materials they could find to build their bushcraft shelters and wood houses.

*Edit - After reading some of the feedback from you guys, the door doesn't quite look as authentic compared to the rest of the saxon house. So it will be a temporary door for now. We already have some ideas for a more authentic looking one! I think the door looks fine and is solid, but if you want it to look more "authentic" why not cover it with some hides that may be a little worn, if your friend has any available? Hanging them with the neck up and maybe overlapping would shed water I think.

TA- Mike, can you tell me about that cooking rig Over the fire? Is it commercially available or was it made for you? It looks amazing. We’re trying to get our Boy Scouts away from cooking over propane and back onto wood. A rig like that would be perfect. Thanks! Amazing videos by the way. You’ve inspired me to get out more with my 13 year old son. Thank you.

The grass growing on the ridgeline may be a good thing. The root system that develops should help tie everything together quite well, and any water that penetrates the surface should be soaked up by the roots and used to further the growth. Then again, it may accelerate the deterioration of the cap and cause huge leaks down the road. *shrugs* Isn't experimental archaeology fun?

Around the 11:15 mark I was suddenly struck by the incongruous modern tea bag in all the primitive implements. And then it also dawned on me that the Saxons didn't even have tea! (They never went to China). All good... Work hard, enjoy your usual comforts, yes? LOL. Again, always good seeing a young man actually having quality time with his dad-- and you guys do good work! Keep on it! Love your series.

Mike, Your "long straw" looks like wheat (or some kind of cereal grain) to me, if so it's no wonder that it has sprouted. You could have cut the seed heads off and scattered them about although that would have taken time. As it is you may end up having to "mow" your roof from time to time! LOL!! It looks really good, I have been following your build with great interest. I really wish you would answer the question I have asked several times (as I'm sure others have asked during the build) "Where's Dustin in all of this? That Door... Not period correct at all, you gotta do something better. Split some logs and use those, it may take longer but it would look better in the long run, I'm not going to knock it though, you and your Dad have done a great job!!

No need to change the door! By who’s standard is it not authentic? From drawings that can be dated to the actual period, or Hollywood’s standard authentic? The door is sound, sturdy, and functional....how can that not be authentic?

if you wanted to weatherproof/windproof the walls better and make them more durable/prevent rotting it might make sense to clay over the log parts of the front and back walls, and then plaster over and whitewash all of the walls, inside and out. While obviously that's a lot brighter looking than most ppl think when they think of a saxon house, it would actually be historically accurate for them to be plastered and whitewashed the way old pubs are
