Building a Thatch Roof House with Hand Tools: Bushcraft Saxon Shelter (PART 12)

    διάρκεια: 35:12

We're in the woods building a bushcraft saxon house using hand tools. In part 12 we use an auger and hand drill to build the door, we then use long straw or combed straw to cap the ridge on the top of the thatch roof of the saxon shelter. The combed straw is called "triticale" and is a mix of wheat and rye. The reason we used it to build the top of the roof is because it is much more pliable and easy to bend then water reed. It also has the disease resistance of wheat and the hardiness of rye, which makes it last longer on the roof. To finish off the roof, I used a barrel eye scotch auger and some hand carved wood pegs to fix some cross supports to the top of the thatch roof. This will help pin down the ash liggers (battens) and keep the thatch pinned down during heavy rain and wind. We finish the clay walls inside, using the wattle and daub technique. The Saxon House is now pretty much finished. We have tried to keep it as historically correct as we could. But for things such as the door, we used recycled pallet wood and iron hinges. The reason we did this is because we wanted the door to last and not rot away. It has been an incredible experience building with hand tools. Working with nature to create an ancient home of our ancestors. The Anglo Saxons were very resourceful and would have used whatever natural materials they could find to build their bushcraft shelters and wood houses.

*Edit - After reading some of the feedback from you guys, the door doesn't quite look as authentic compared to the rest of the saxon house. So it will be a temporary door for now. We already have some ideas for a more authentic looking one! May I suggest at the end that you would make a 'facade sign' rough google translation from the Dutch word gevelteken. This is what has been used in the Netherlands and parts of Germany (the area when a lot of the saxons came from) for a long time. It is similar to a blessing of the house that also indicated who lives there. You can find load of examples when you google gevelteken. I love your video's, keep up the good work!

I don't know how closely these houses would have been positioned, but I can only imagine how improper management of cooking / warming fires must have been a constant threat to the dwellings.

A strip of leather can be used as a hinge and was quite common in colonial American and on the frontier. I assume we brought it from England. If the leather is kept oiled it will last well. I believe a fire could be built inside one of these buildings. How was this done? Did they allow the smoke to rise up through the thatch or was there a vent? How did you close between the eves and the thatch?

While I don't know a lot about the 'accurate' Saxon house, I know that in the early U.S. 'Mountain Man Era' (1805-1835) many cabins which were 'slatted' or 'poled' (roof) were often 'mud thatched with grasses', and then a heavy addition of 'grass seeds' were added to basically grow a verge on the roof, which had the natural function of better-holding the roof covering in-place (the grass roots) along with helping to absorb rain and prevent 'leak-thrus'. Seeing your thatch growing fresh sprouts at the crown made me think of this, and wonder, 'could you just add a couple of pounds of grass seed (fine fescue, etc.) to the roof and help bind it in place?

Very pleased with all you've done! I have enjoyed every episode and look forward to the next one! I finally know a bit of how to thatch a roof! We, here in Wyoming, USA, don't really have anything that would work for a thatch material. We do have reeds, here but I doubt, withing 50 miles there is enough to thatch one house of the size you have, there. So, I don't think that we could manage it! However, I do remember a spot, roughly 75 miles from my current location on the Wind River Indian Reservation that has reeds that grow to a height of 7 to 9 feet! AND there are probably enough of them there, to do a house of the size you have! I remember finding it many years ago when I was trapping Beaver along a marshy, sandy/mud bottomed creek. There may be a lot more of it up or down from where I was when I found it. It's on private property and I don't know if they would allow it to be harvested! Anyway, my point is that if one were to try to build, as you did, I think the roofing material might have to be sod, as was used during the 19th Century all over the Western US Plains. As a matter of fact, whole homes were constructed of sod blocks and the were appropriately called "soddies". As I said, I have enjoyed going along on your journey and can't wait for the next episode! Kudos, guys! Best wishes from me to you!

The grass growing on the ridgeline may be a good thing. The root system that develops should help tie everything together quite well, and any water that penetrates the surface should be soaked up by the roots and used to further the growth. Then again, it may accelerate the deterioration of the cap and cause huge leaks down the road. *shrugs* Isn't experimental archaeology fun?
