Yes, it's man-made. Environmental conditions and mismanagement of forest resources explain the intensity of the fires but not the frequency and randomness. Go to Google and look up "PYROTERRORISM". Recently, the U.S. Forest Service had a conference on Pyroterrorism. Plans exist on the internet on how to build remote-controlled incendiary devices. These plans are in Arabic. As internet sources say, the Jihadis are using fires as a way to "hurt" the United States. The MSM will not cover this, as it's non PC.

As a resident of the wine country, during the Tubbs fire I noticed that the big tankers were led to the target drop area by twin engine spotter planes that indicated the start of the suppressant drop run with smoke. The tanker followed about a quarter mile behind and dropped it's water on entry into the spotter's smoke trail. Helicopters were used more tactically and saved a lot of homes and wineries at the fire zone's edges. Big D 8 Caterpillar crews were also instrumental in creating effective fire breaks once the wind got to manageable levels by dozing side by side to create an immediate wide defensible break. In my entire life of 70+ years in California, I don't recall such extreme fire damage to towns and suburbs as in the past two years.

Sincere question for you/the internet: is forest management (brush & dead tree thinning etc.) a state or federal (Forest Service) responsibility? When Pres. Thanks for the 2 videos about the Camp Fire. I'm out of town and up on the beautiful Mendocino Coast in Fort Bragg and I finally was able to get on my computer to see if you were on top of this. I should have known. ;-) The day the fire started we'd just gotten up here and so went grocery shopping. Beautiful day, some wind. When we got out of the store and headed back down Hwy 1 we saw a huge plume of brown smoke in the sky and were wondering how close we were to the fire. When I checked and found out it was in Butte County I was astounded. The smoke looked like it was so close. We could smell it just like when the fires went through Santa Rosa a year ago. Then I heard that Paradise was burnt down. The neighbor up here was building a ramp for their travel trailer and it turns out that the 90 year old father and his wife and some other relatives had their house burn down and will be living here for awhile. At least they had a place to go. So sad to see this happening again this year. I really appreciate your updates Juan!!!

Looks pretty bad, prayers and thoughts with you all, stay safe folks! You need kamikaze drones that you can launch into the fire, if they were filled with foam under pressure, they could fly straigh into the fire in huge swarms and release a foam that expands when depressurised, or some other retadant. I still think you need to cut out large strips of forest say about 500 meteres wide and several miles long, staion water tanks and a piping network that can be connected to those agricultural sprinklers, that way, when a fire is burning you could move the sprinklers to the strip nearest to the fire and either spray the fire or soak the remaining forest and dampen it to try and prevent it from igniting

Πριν χρόνο
Aten Ra
Aten Ra

Actually, now i think about it... howabaout reatrdant missiles? instead of drones, special firetrucks could have a rocket launcher type system that they launch from say a 100 feet way, high pressure cannisters filled with some kind of retardant that expands when the cannister is depressurised. you could make it remote so as soon as it's over the target you can release the retardant , would only need to be in the flames for a split second, no chance of getting hot enough to get damaged and be unable to 'detonate' the payload of retardant, maybe more like a grenade type mechanism, detonates 10 seconds after launch With drones you could maybe launch them by catapault type system from a couple of hundred feet away but then i thought missiles would probably be more cost effective, could saturate a large area of the ground in the time it takes to refill several planes. Also with the strips of land, probably a better idea to do that around the edges of towns, strips of land with a fire prevention water tower and sprinkler system that can at least help slow the fire down if not dampen the ground to prevent it coming into the town Something needs doing because you get too many fires causing too much devestation over there. #StayStrong :) Maybe these ideas have already been considered, just putting it out there....

speaking with Red Cross years ago, they thought that Paradise was the most likely place for a disaster in Butte County. They were worried about a grass fire from the valley running uphill into the tall trees of Paradise. There are very few roads into or out of Paradise. It seemed like disaster waiting to happen. Many years ago there was a fire break created in this area between the grassy valley and the tall trees, much of it was called Ponderosa Road.

Juan, your next assignment is reporting on the wind conditions in Northern California and the placement of PG&E power lines crossing cuts in ridges that create intense vortex of air pressure during the hard east winds from high pressure over the basin and ranges. The slot in the ridge a small creek goes through and a smaller canyon midway up from the Feather River right at the reported location of the fires starting looks suspicious, looks like an incredibly rough patch in high winds in a light plane. Family used to own a Cessna 182, I have hurled all over the back of a Cessna, coastal range turbulence coming into Santa Barbara. Got a lot of info on the way updrafts work, crashed RC gliders due to slots in coastal cliffs shooting jets of air out and tipping the wings over while I am trying to figure out if I am supposed to reverse the controls yet. So I know how those winds can mess with anything over the path of least resistance and bottlenecks. PG&E lack of use of fluid dynamic studies of airflow in placing power lines is killing a lot o people in Northern California in my opinion. I would love to hear your expert opinion, I cant imagine a better person to look into it, if it is indeed an issue. Maybe a local eagle or hawk knows more about airflow in the Sierra foothills, but they are hard to get a peep out of.

I see a lot of misinformed comments here, so let me clear a few things up. The fire was NOT started by a campfire. It was started by PG&E transmission lines on CAMP Creek Road, hence the name “CAMP Fire”. In July 2011, a PG&E subcontractor clear cut a wide swath under the transmission lines on Camp Creek Road. I was there, no tree was spared, and I have photos to prove it. So, don’t start making assumptions about things you know nothing about, and start blaming (insert name of person or entity you don’t like) for tall trees touching a power line.

Πριν χρόνο
Watertank
Watertank

PG&E knows very well that they hired a subcontractor to clear-cut under the Camp Creek Road transmission lines in July 2011; I'm sure it is documented in their records. That said, I HAVE contacted investigators. The investigators "making a decision" is obviously beyond my control. But my main concern is that there are plenty of outsiders, who have never stepped foot in Butte County, never mind reside in Butte County, making a bunch of know-it-all comments on the Blancolirio Camp Fire videos, and other social media venues, about what their interpretation is as to what started the Camp Fire.

The natural condition for California forests, before man's arrival, was to have a wildfire at 50 year intervals more or less, clearing out the brush while the large trees remained uninjured. In looking at several videos posted by news channels, I saw many instances of burned out cars or buildings with uninjured trees all around. I only spotted one tree killed, it had lost its leaves and twigs. If California homes had as much fireproofing as the forests, many of them might survive a fire like this one.

Juan thanks for the update. I am a retired Cal Fire Battalion Chief with 34 years of experience. I supervised copter 106 for 12 years. Your fixed wing info is spot on. The competition for air tankers tomorrow will be interesting as we transition in to more timber and away from structures in the Feather river drainage and near Sterling City. The fires in Southern California may take priority. I know that this fire will be off to the races Late Saturday and early Sunday when the winds resurface. It’s just not humanly possible to put in that much holding line before the winds show up. This is truly the fire we all knew that could happen. I remember back in 1980 we studied this at the First Butte College Fire academy which I attended. Thanks for all you do.

+Joe Booth the areas that are burning are super Steep and Rocky Canyons. farm equipment cannot reach these areas and there are not many roads. the environmentalists have prevented removing dead trees and logging in many of these areas. all over the Sierra Nevadas the forests are very thick with young trees and brush. some areas are so thick with young trees that you cannot even walk through these areas. some areas are being cleared and logged but much more needs to be done to reduce the fuel load in our National Forests. Tahoe ,El Dorado , Stanislaus, Plumas, and other National Forests.. why don't you visit California and take a drive up into our forests and see how beautiful they are although heavily treed, and you will see firsthand what we are talking about. some of the Canyons in a forest are too steep to even walk down the hills without a rope.

@Joe Booth Farm country us not what is burning. The central valley and imperial valley are the flat fertile areas where almost all the farming takes place. These areas don't really burn in wild fires. The wilderness areas are where the fires happen. Coastal ranges and the Sierras. This fire took place at the foot of the feather river drainage, in the northern sierra foothills. Very little farming is done there. It is mostly forest land, with scrub and oak transitioning to pine forests as the elevation increases. Getting rid of farming would do nothing to alleviate this.

As of 9 p.m. PST the death toll is up to 9. Here in Gridley is a COLD night! The current temperature is 39 degrees, and it's only 10:30. Not much wind here so the low tomorrow morning will be really cold. The high today was in the low 60s and we are experiencing a "smoke and ash winter" kind of like a volcanic ash winter or nuclear winter-- same principle. Almost all of our Paradise friends and Yankee Hill family are evacuated and accounted for, thankfully. All our Paradise friends have lost their homes, however. Judging by the fire perimeter map, our Yankee Hill family narrowly escaped losing their home, once again. The last big Concow/Yankee Hill fire got within 100 yards of their home. Hopefully they had all of their emergency thousand gallon rubber water "bladders" full of water.

Love your channel, I remember your channel from the Orwell dam fiasco! Keep us posted! Great info! I spent summers at my stepgrandparents trailer in Paradise. We swam at the public pool in Paradise, too. I remember the manzanita brush which are highly flammable. That area has always been very hot and dry. People are going to need to build fire-proof structures just as Florida has people build hurricane-proof structures. Fire suppression measures need to be built into the house and the landscaping. Hard way to learn that lesson. I remember seeing the hills outside of Pomona, CA, on fire, when I was a child. It was a horrifying experience and is the reason I will never live in California, ever. Watching houses burn is an horrific experience. I was probably 8 or 9 years old and that memory has never left me. The smell of a wildfire causes me to panic. People need to realize the lifelong impact this will have on their children. My families house didn't burn down. But hearing the helicopters, seeing the hillsides on fire, is something I have never forgotten. I am now 55 years old.
