The reason the Night King has no story or character is because he was created by the show writers. There is no one leader of the white walkers in the books, unless you could the Great Other (which we haven't seen). Dave and Dan just thought it would be cool to put hin in the show so there he is.

NK coming from the north. KL is in the south. What you would do is evacuate the north (so as not feed the NK with more troops), go around KL where Cersei is and wait there. She would get the NK at her step and would have to make a choice between honoring her original deal or die by the NK. This or ferry people to the east. For the WWs and wights you would've used dragonglass caltrops. Before they ran out of books the tactics seemed to matter. S8 is genious if it's secretely a meta take on what it's like to have alzheimer's; because I followed this show from the start and S8 sort of just erased it from my memory. I was pissed for a week after E3 and then E4 happened and BOOM! memory almost wiped clean. It's all sort of hazy now and the show rarely pops into my mind (where it would've resided for a long time had it ended well and not as an implosion). "Did that ever happen? Did this show ever exist?". S8 is like the television show equivalent of the MiB mind flasher.

The showrunners didn't care about taking their time. George RR Martin wanted the series to be 11 Seasons long. The showrunners were not going to do that. And they were ready to move on to other projects so they rushed the last two seasons. Do your homework some more please.

Night King was set up less like a character and more like the embodiment of a zombie-and-blizzard-themed natural disaster. Imagine if after all this political hype and handwringing we've seen about global warming for decades...someone just punched global warming and the problem was solved. Great for the world, maybe, but what a bad narrative decision.

Here’s a massive problem with episode 3 that I haven’t seen be mentioned anywhere: The episode removes all reason for the White Walker to exist. The Night King does absolutely nothing of importance in the battle, Rheygal dies anyway in the next episode, the newly resurrected zombies accomplish nothing, the weakened troops slaughter the Lannister army anyway, and the loss of all the secondary characters makes zero impact on the following episodes. So what is the point of even having the White Walkers in the show to begin with? The big final climactic battle to end almost a decade of build up, sock and awe, the very first fucking scene of the show is poorly lit and amounts to fuck all. Perhaps if there were actual consequences, like if it felt that Danny may not have massacred a city if Jorah wasn’t dead the same way it felt like the Red Wedding might not have happened if Ned Stark was still alive but it doesn’t. My jaw should be buried in the Earth’s core when I rewatch this episode lamenting what the losses meant for the series but all I can think is “Ehh it still looks pretty awesome”. This is how you butcher a story. Ever since season 5 Jon has been running around trying to tell everyone to drop the petty human shit because literal death is coming from us all. That no matter how badly we betray and hurt each other that there are things worse than any human could be and only together can we beat it. NOPE!!! All it takes is the pointless deaths of thousands an a cool knife trick before we can go back to killing each other over a fucking chair! Let’s say this season had to be 6 episodes long (despite the studio offering 10!), what could’ve been done? Restructure and rewrite it. There is no way to salvage the story they already have, it is complete and utter ass. Have Jamie stay with Cersei at the end of season 7 and lead the Lannister army as she had planned to recapture territory and sit behind Jon and Dannie’s forces. Have them get absolutely pounded, most of their men dying and converting to whites, Winterfell being reduced to a heap of rubble, and Rheygal being crippled. When they try to retreat they run into the hostile Lannister forces who still believe they can win on their own. Jon and Jamie have a discussion in which Jamie realises that despite all the horrible deeds he has committed in his life he is not irredeemable and he will be forgiven simply for standing by humanity. The joint force retreats further south where they are ambushed and attacked by Cersei and the Golden Company, still trying to fend for themselves and not seeing the bigger picture. In the ensuing chaos Jamie’s hand is broken (important), the White Walker army catches up and begins the slaughter. Instead of only killing the Night King every one of the Walker generals has to die to defeat the dead, most of the cast including Jon dying in the fight. Once the battle is over Cersei tries to order what is left of her troops to restart the battle only to be stabbed by Jamie with his broken gold hand, his story having come full circle in the killing of a ruler he swore to protect for the greater good of Westeros, except now people truly see why. From here Danny is crowned queen, Sansa requests northern independence which gets shot down under the pretence that the Kingdoms need to remain united, other lords across Westeros are still somewhat threatened by a foreign queen that still has a dragon, and the show ends with peace having been brought to the realm with everyone questioning just how long it can last.

I got into the show after it ended and heard about this infamous season. My reaction to Danny destroying King's Landing was, nothing. Her actions were so forced that the most I could feel was that it made no sense, not to mention it lasted way too long. Also regardless of how you feel about her as a villain some of the ways the show tried to set her up as one were terrible. We see her execute a Randyll Tarly, an abusive father who threatened to murder his own son before sending him to the Wall, all over Samwell being an intellectual as opposed to a fighter. We also saw he is a racist shit. Yet we are supposed to see it as wrong when Danny has him killed, when a lot of audience members were happy to see him die. Not to mention Jon Snow executed a man who was begging for mercy, and in the pilot episode we saw Ned Stark execute a deserter. Just executing someone isn't ground for an act of evil when the show's heroes have done it.

I fully understood the end and where they took Dany, but my problem is for 6 years Game of Thrones was this brilliant slow paced wide scale drama that really took its time and built thing up the right way, then they decide they need to end it in 2 more shortened seasons hit warp speed and ruined everything they built. If they had just taken their time where they ended would have been ok. Most shows are ruined because they try to drag them out for every last drop of ratings, but GOT did the exact opposite. I however will never be happy with how the Night King was handled, but once again more time and you could have dedicated a whole season to it.

I really like the idea of running the same events at the end of episode 5 and the beginning of episode 6. So at the end of five we see Dany flying her majestic dragon and leading the charge. The camera is high above the city and the music is triumphant and exultant. Dany has won, finally she has come home! Then at the beginning of episode 6, we see the same events from ground level, the music is soft and mournful and we see Jon and Arya trapped in this horrific conflagration. We experience the true costs of Dany's ambitions and maybe even Jon has to watch Arya die. I like this symmetry because it really highlights and unpacks how the audience has been carried along on this euphoric wave of Dany's destiny for ten years, and at this final hour we realise it was all a lie. The moral good is not and has never been with the chosen hero's journey to fulfil their destiny at any cost. The true good lies only with the good of the people, and it is Dany who has failed this final test.

I think GOT went south way before the last season. They ran out of books after season 6 or so and it really showed. I stopped watching in season 7 because it just didn't feel that interesting anymore. Also they killed Jon Snow (which is awesome because it's the thrill of the show that it's never afraid to kill off beloved characters) and then brings him back to life because fuck logic, everyone loves Jon Snow!

So many shows have this problem. They kill a big character because they know it will be impactful, and then realise "Fuck, if we kill all the big, loved characters, people will stop watching, fuck it, bring them back", and at that point, there's not much in the way of stakes. Even if it's established "They can't resurrect over and over", once they've broken that seal, it's boring and tensionless cause they'll just bring back who they need.

Personally, I simply don't agree with you on the battle scene being good in any way, but I have a much bigger problem with your stance on that episode: Your solution doesn't address the problem with the Night King. If they did exactly what you said, it would have ended on a higher note, but it still would have sucked overall. Aside from being anticlimactic in the worst possible way, putting the battle with the White Walkers so early was objectively a deflation of the tension, which is bad by your own rules. The Night King is basically the Satan of the GoT universe. His mere existence is an end-of-the-world level threat, whereas the struggle for the throne of Westeros has never even been the biggest political threat. A supernatural war for the fate of all life makes political strife seem rather insignificant by comparison. Furthermore, you're flat-out wrong about the story "not being about the Night King". The white walkers are the first things we see in the entire series. It's obvious from the get-go that the point of the series isn't who sits on the throne, but that the struggle for the throne is distracting us from a much bigger problem. Ending with any other conflict isn't just inherently deflating the tension, _it fundamentally invalidates the premise of the entire story._

Number one how in gods name could anybody have any idea how hard these actors truly worked, number two how can anybody have the right to say anything about something they know nothing about in regards to what happens behind the scenes or between the author and the writers, number three how can any of you have the audacity to talk down on any of these actors we are all the ones that watched all the episodes leading up to the last episode if you don’t have anything nice to say ,Then why even speak? If your mind is so consumed with something so aggravating then why even speak it obviously has the best of you because you continue and everyone else out there continues to dog and dog about something that’s been over now for almost 6 months . Assuming the final two books eventually come out, that'll be about two thousand more pages of source material. Even if they had a full story outline of those two books to work with (which I don't believe), D&D only had a couple of diminished-size seasons of episodes to wrap it up. They couldn't adequately tell the story even if they knew what it was. This couldn't've ended well.

So many problems with this show... so many plot threads left hanging. So many inconsistent character actions. So many characters placed in certain positions, not to be a part of the action, but to allow the audience a viewpoint to the action. Arya trains for years to be the master assassin, so it is in character that she kills the night king... but she didnt use any of the techniques she spent years learning. She didnt use the faces of her victims. She just needed to be in the right place at the right time. Then she goes on a suicide mission to Kings Landing, only to change her mind at the last moment, for no reason, simply to give the viewer a person to follow through the city. Meanwhile, Jon's entire character arch was meaningless. He wasn't necessary to defeat the Night King, and his history didn't matter in his killing of Dani. It took years to build up R+L=J but that ended up being meaningless. Then, once Dani is dead, everyone acts out of character. Greyworm doesn't fight Jon. Jon Snow is a submissive prisoner. Tyrian is all of a sudden allowed to name the new king. Everyone likes Bran all of a sudden... for no reason at all. He accepts his position as king, even though he had previously said that he had to forgo his earthly title as lord because he was the Three Eyed Raven now... but to be king, he's cool with that. Oh, and despite Jamie being literally killed on the beach in the most random confrontation of all... he survives long enough to fulfill the prophecy of killing his "older" sister... Except instead he comforts her and they both die in an uneventful way, completely not in line with the story they had been building toward... Oh, and what the f*ck was up with the White Walker art??? Was the Night King's mission really so simplistic? It was a let down in every way for every character. Every single character.

Pardon my english, never saw the show. What i can gather from this video is that too much feminism is involved. A dragon rider woman who destroys society standards (the city), we have the queen too, also an ultimate assassin girl who one hit killed the most dangerous foe. Men fight, do nothing in the plot, powerful man die in a 1 hit kill from a girl (this is most refered as taking down patriarchy) and (at the end) betray a woman by killing her in a cheap way. The story is defined by women.

7:53 so the explanation for this statement i can agree with, however i disagree with the statement itself. I don't see how in any way this is in the character of Dani, when, like you've stated, she is murdering random unknown civilians for literally no reason. It's actually a complete u-turn in character. Since the very beginning of the show we have seen Dani on her journey to reclaim her "Rightful place on the Iron Throne", and along the way, we have seen how much she cherishes the lives of innocent lives; refusing gold from the Yunkai Masters cos she wanted to liberate slaves, her repulsion at the fact Drogon killed that one child, hell even the fact that she hadn't attacked kings landing up to this point because she wanted to preserve the lives of the innocent people. One of the most memorable quotes of her from the early seasons is when she says "The blood of my enemies, not the blood of innocents" in response to Jorah's previous statement (sorry dont remember the details of that conversation); she has constantly been one to preserve the lives of innocents before any other, and yet in this season, no, this episode, we see her take a complete 180 and is like "Screw it" and kills *every single innocent of Kings Landing*. That is far from in character. And that's just one gripe with it. The fact that some people are trying to say that she was justified because she had gone insane. For all those people; that is BS and you know it. You stated this in your video where you say there was no build up to the event, you nailed that on the head. I remember watching this episode and that initial shot of her incinerating the fleeing, screaming civilians, i was just distraught. i dont think ive been more surprised by anything in any show (a bit hyperbolic but you get my point). It doesnt make sense to me in anyway. Insanity you say? look at Arya, literally going around and assassinating people on her kill list since around what Season 2; look at Sansa, feeding Ramsay Bolton to his dogs after the battle of the bastards; look at John-goddamn-snow, hanging for of his brothers of the nights watch, one of which (Olly), was practically a kid who didn't even know what he was doing and following his subordinates as theyre the only people that he can look to for aid and advice, blindly following them because he truly feels that it's his duty as a brother of the nights watch, all executed cos Jon has a strong conviction. These characters didnt go insane, so it must not have been all the murder Dani's done obviously, so what was it? Is it because she lost Jorah, lost her two other dragons, lost Messandey? is it because she lost people? John did. Arya did. Cersei did and somehow, *somehow*, she manages to seem more mentally intact than Dani does. What hurts more about this scene is that its not like these are civilian casualties, she actively goes out of her way to burn the women and children of Kings landing. "The only option her character to take" you say? Why not burn down the red keep, she'll kill Cersei, yknow her target, the one that caused her all of her pain in recent memory, and the deaths of those *in* the red keep would maybe have been an accident; amongst the chaos of Dani expelling her rage on the red keep, debris fall and crush a few civilians, of course not the best outcome but goddamn. There was no reason for this. Her character could've been fine. But no. They butchered a great character, one that i personally had no particular interest in may i add. Your entitled to your opinion as always, but i'm sorry, can't agree to that. So TLDR; it was out of character, i disagree with your statement, but you can believe what you will sorry its so long...

I mean, you mention some things that were problematic, but there's so much more that was wrong with this that ran much deeper and was happening pretty much ever since the show moved from the source material. Most of it people mentioned already. For me, personally, one of the biggest disappointments of the latest season was complete and utter abandonment of consequence. It was well established in the books and therefore in the show when it was following the books that people's choices matter and you only survive if you're smart and make smart decisions. If anyone in the show made too many unwise decisions they would die and it didn't matter how important they seemed to be. Biggest characters in the show died because that's what would happen to them in this environment if they made a big mistake. It was always established that they had a choice and they took the wrong path and were punished for that. What we got after the show started going in it's own direction was absolute garbage when it came to this. Characters die purely for shock value for no real reason, with nothing coming from their death. But most of them are smaller characters that had no real role in the show anymore and so viewers don't care that much. The main cast however, is making one stupid decision after another and they always magically get out of it. Every single main character's IQ was dropped about 50 points on top of being faced with decisions that didn't leave the possibility for them to make the smart choice. So ultimately, the feeling I was left with was that the characters were no longer the makers of their own story. They were puppets pulled around by their strings doing what the writers needed them to do to end the show quickly. And maybe if this was any other show, people wouldn't notice, but a show that put such a heavy emphasis on the importance of the decision and how every action has its consequence just can't get away with this.

Dany’s decision was not in character. She talks tyrant but hardly does it, not because she is unafraid of doing it, but because she usually eventually chooses differently. (Season 7 started the show’s decline for me, but this episode of Season 8 really made me want to consider the show a write-off. And the last episode was just more of the same stuff in lesser degree.) You mean to tell me that after all Dany endured, she’d do a 180 and fire indiscriminately at friend and foe? If they needed another season to show her decline, it should have been written. Not just half an episode. That’s not enough. If you want to show her mental decline and leas up to horrible decision making, show it. Don’t just go for shock value. It does need to be earned. Dany would therefore not be “insane” because of her genetics but because of circumstance AND the decisions she kept making leading up to a climax. The Night King being defeated needed more respect to the lore. And if they wanted to make Arya the Prince that was Promised, make the connections properly. And yes the primary conflict was the resistance to becoming. Cersei becoming full on narcissist as a queen. And Dany becoming full on tyrannical as a conquerer. And John... give John somn to do, at the end when he took the fall for his siblings yet again it was so unsatisfying. “I took out the tyrant which is the only decisive thing I’ve done all season. Have your kingdoms and adventures while this Targaryen, me... in case anyone is forgetting my big reveal lineage that served nothing, disappears at the end of the earth as a depressing and forgettable end is all I can think of for me.” Who cares about Ceresei’s army? They’re still glorified paid hands. What are they going to do against a dragon after said dragon bar-b-que’d their ballistas? That they fell like chumps didn’t matter to me. The real struggle was against Cersei who seemed like a full on narcissist and Dany who was seemed to be becoming more tyrannical. Dany should have targeted the Red Keep with Ceresei in it. But they ended it with her going nuts in what seemed one fell swoop, and with Cersei dying in the arms of her loved one, and Dany getting tossed by hers. The entire show seemed more sympathetic with Cersei whose MO is manipulation 101, and empty with Dany who cared far more deeply of even slaves and her being concerned that she wasn’t all that great a ruler. And why isn’t anyone talking about Misandei being found in chains during her intro and eventually dying in chains? I don’t really care if the last episode is a resolution episode not afraid of breaking “storeytelling 101” because many books and movies feel like they forget to take care of the resolution properly to me. If you care about the characters you journeyed with, you’d care about where they end up. They show-runners failed to take care of the franchise properly toward the last two seasons. Do it properly or wait to do it properly. I hardly think they were running out of money anyways, and I think the studio was expecting more seasons. People blame it on the fact that the show lapped the books and to each their own. Some of the characters I love in the show, I hate in the books, they took creative liberties I can appreciate. But the show-runners tapped out way before the end, to me.

how about this: after defeating the Night King, the Stark-Targaryan alliances found out that the Golden Company has already moved north and wait for the moment to surround and kill remaining forces. The Stark and Tyrion were captured alive and many key characters got killed. Dany and Jon escapted and Dany blamed it on Jaime and Tyrion. With all the anger against not only King's Landing, but people around her, she told Jon to gather the remaining force for a counterstrike. When exhausted troops barely won the war, Dany didn't give a damn and sack King's Landing by herself.
