These videos are so interesting. I'm from the Philippines and recently (as in just yesterday) our airport (used to be one of the world's worst airports) had many flights delayed and diverted because of an aircraft skidding off a runway. I wonder what else happens during these times and what are the incurred losses of an airport? A video would be fun!

This makes me think a lot about our local international airport, PDX (Portland International in Oregon), to which the airport is owned near-entirely by the Port of Portland (who also owns Hillsboro & Troutdale Airports, among other properties in the region), with a sliver owned jointly by METRO (a Regional government, apparently). That being said, PDX is VERY similar in regards to attempt to make as much of a profit off of passengers and people coming in to pick up or drop off their friends and family for flights as they can. A plethora of shops with exorbitant price tags, most are "specialty" shops, cafes and restaurants, and they remodeled it with this Heathrow style in mind, though in a ridiculously smaller capacity (PDX is tiny, and can't really fit many more airlines, and has no space to expand at all, lest they somehow manage to successfully make the public intensely livid by forcing the Columbia river to be filled in. That said, there still wouldn't be much more space AT ALL. Wouldn't put it past our governments though, that's for sure).

Love the video especially because Heathrow is my favourite btw they're planning on opening a new terminal (Terminal 6) to increase the amount of flights per day. I think a plan lands or takes off about every 45 seconds so they're trying to add another terminal to increase their profits rather than depend on airlines to build larger plans with a great capacity but other than that love the video man.

Did I understand you correctly that there are any privately owned commercial airports in the US? I would be very surprised by that. As noted, they're not cheap to run. Incidentally, while I admit I haven't flown in some time--not being in the Air Force any longer had a BIG impact there--I recall rarely buying much in airports. Most airports I've been through had shops which struck me as being well-overpriced for everything. If I ever manage to travel much again, I expect I will only spend money of rental cars and road maps. I can buy everything else at better prices elsewhere.

When you’re discussing disadvantages of Heathrow running domestic flights, don’t forget that due to the size of the country, it is almost always faster to drive or use buses or trains than it is to fly within the U.K., and from most English cities the cost of a train ticket to London is comparable or less than the cost of a plane ticket.

But how are they going to attract bigger planes when apparently large aircrafts with four engines are going out of fashion? If they don't serve connections from smaller airports in Britain, won't Airlines eventually install direct connections, even transatlantic, especially since fees at smaller airports are so much lower? I bet that Heathrow currently makes tons of money from passengers who need to connect through those few 'hubs' in Western Europe in oder to cross over the ocean. And if those connections to smaller destinations fall flat, airlines won't be able to fill up their gigantic aircrafts (that make up the bulk of Heathrow's income) anyways.

I try to buy as little as I can at an airport. The prices are a scam. I usually get a couple of sandwiches at a supermarket before I go there and I try to get an empty waterbottle with me. The only thing I do buy is coffee, because I can't survive an early flight without it.

But are British people really seeking for national flights when they can take trains and busses which take a bit longer but counting the way to Heathrow, the checks and waiting add quite a bit. Then you have luggage restrictions. So is there a demand for flights to those destinations?

However, British people don't want a connecting flight from Heathrow, because the UK has very frequent and reasonably fast train service, which is far more convenient than taking a domestic flight. So, actually British people don't care about connecting through Heathrow as taking the train is a far more convenient option.
