UK airports are extremely expensive because there is no proper coordination or integration between the hundreds of sub-contractors, franchises and services which make up the whole. Also many of the service providers are chosen based on the lowest bid, not on quality of service. So for example Swissport, one of the worst, most inefficient and poorly run baggage processors, has multiple contracts with many UK airports and are now too big to fail. The captive consumer paradigm is ruthlessly exploited at the major UK airports, leading to rip off prices for something as simple as a bottle of drinking water, which at Gatwick is more expensive than the equivalent volume of petrol (W.H Smith I'm looking at you). Privatisation of these airports has resulted in higher executives of uniformly under-performing companies awarding themselves fabulous salaries while their workers earn a pittance. The apparent low cost of some airline tickets is completely offset by high car parking and rail/road transport costs, ever-increasing check-in and waiting times, expensive catering, control-freakery, inflexible management of passengers, herding, and micro-management of every visitor. Business class passengers do much better (they can turn up 20 minutes before a flight) but at an enormous cost absorbed by corporations who pass on the huge ticket prices to their product customers, so they don't particularly care how expensive tickets are. In the UK almost every flight, from med holidays, to domestic flights, to long haul is a miserable, convoluted experience, and you'd get to the same destination twice as quickly 30 years ago - there's progress for you. Gatwick in particular is nothing more than a definitive dystopian experience, where 3 hour check-ins are the norm, and you are then herded into a ghastly, low roofed hall full of over-crowded, over-expensive sub-standard bars and cafes, and barely an available seat in busy periods. After which some passengers have to walk up to two miles along gate access walkways due to the disastrously designed infrastructure. The whole edifice is "sponsored" by battleship grey corporate HSBC colours which dominate every structure, adding to the miserable ambience further. If you are travelling from say the south coast to the north of England, it is cheaper, and often quicker to drive, take a coach or even take an off peak train. Flying in the UK is a total misery and not worth the trouble. It used to be a delightful experience. Not any longer. BTW at Gatwick they keep you herded in the departure "lounge" for as long as they can before declaring the gate at the last possible moment, resulting in people actually having to RUN for a mile to catch their plane if they are unlucky enough to have a gate at the furthest point.

The point you make regarding connecting UK flights is a naive one. The majority of locations you've listed for the Amsterdam to UK destination are within a 100 mile radius of Heathrow, hence it would be absolutely pointless to fly. Heathrow connects to most other UK major airports.

Bought some snacks to hold me over till the first meal service and bought some other snacks to take back with me. And for those UK people can't they just fly to Gatwick then take a connecting flight? Im sure there are more UK cities served by Gatwick and a lot of long haul routes are also served by Gatwick

I do not agree that people want to go through Heathrow due to how busy it is. They would rather go through a less busy airport. Also rail is much better in the UK than in the US. For origin destination flights, it is easier to take a train in some cases and the LCCs operate at other airports that are not slot constrained.

UK airports are poorly connected to each other because the UK is tiny... What's the point in taking hours to travel to and go through airport check in when you could already be there by the time your flight takes off via another mode of transport? You can't compare it to China.

No flights to the rest of the U.K. doesn't bother many tbh. Heathrow is quite far out of London, so if you want to fly into the capital from the UK or out of the capital to the UK you would use London City airport which is fairly central in the capital.

The U.S. is much bigger in land area, and therefore much more dependent on air travel, than much geographically smaller countries like the U.K. are. Very few people want, for instance, to take three days nonstop to cross the contiguous U.S. by rail. And while, for instance, a 14-hour rail journey from Penzance to Inverness might be a slog, clearly the premium air travel enjoys over other forms of transport in the U.K. relative to the U.S., at least for domestic travel, is much lower. Therefore it follows that American authorities would be more worried about private companies exploiting a relatively monopolistic hold on the country's large market for long-distance domestic travel.

Awesome.video, I work at London heathrow looking after radio communications. Heathrow also make money off the workers but they incentives us by giving us discount of the food and drink and one or two other items, two or three times a year they do a staff sale where we are allowed to buy other items at a massive discount price but for me the best thing I get to do is look at planes all day while my friends look at the female cabin crew! 9ah to be young and single again) Terminal 3 current layout which you showed is a massive improvement over the old look which was old and in desperate need of a make over and it is effective. When I am on break I walk through T3 and passengers just can’t help themselves but go and have a look at the duty free. To this day I have never seen a passenger get from security to central seating area with out stopping to look at something in duty free

should have mentioned sydney airport, they participate in extortion and extreme profit mongering those slimeballs charge $15 per person to go through sydney airport via the train (plus the train fare from wherever you are going on top of that $15) and that is the cheapest way to get there if you dont want to spend 3 hours on a bus stuck in the ridiculous traffic jams we have here just to go from the city to sydney airport yet the government doesnt impose any sort of penalties for unfair business practices or extortion whereas in adelaide it takes 20 minutes by bus to get to the airport from the city during peak hour and costs about $3 for the bus fare (no extra fees) and the funny thing is despite the fact it makes less money, takes international flights (both arrival and departure) and charges airlines less per flight, adelaide airport actually has better amenities, faster WiFi, more thorough security screening and is easier to navigate than sydney airport i wonder how that works?

People are actually debating about making a successful company a nationalized one ? That"s pretty typical for most European countries ,they never know how to grow enough unemployment and use it for welfare already.France also did this stupid move in the 80"s, while the US refused to do this, France ended with a lot of unemployment due to how inefficient the government always is, especially since they live from people"s taxes and don"t have any need beyond that...

interesting, i fly out of heathrow a few times a year but i always come down from my home town of Glasgow with BA. Lucky for me BA runs that flight to heathrow. Didn't realise 50% of the domestic flights from Heathrow were in Scotland (lucky me for once) Having to walk through duty free after security is Standard in Glasgow airport too, it has been for years. And not showing gate times until later, infuriates me so much -__- obviously now i know why they do it, but when you're in the airport more than once a year it loses the "fun holiday" vibe and you just want to get on the plane and go.
