How Cod Saved the Vikings

The Vikings suffered many hardships living in the north of Europe: long, cold winters and importantly a lack of sunlight. Luckily, they had cod.
    Check out Vitamania: ve42.co/cod
When making a video about vitamins I thought the story would mainly be about supplement pills, whether we should or shouldn't take them and how they're made. But what I found out is vitamins have a remarkable story that affects many more aspects of our lives. For example the Vikings needed a source of vitamin D to last the dark winter months and for their children to develop strong, healthy bones, avoiding rickets.

Regarding wisdom in tradition. You're points made me think of psychedelic mushrooms and other hallucinogens. There are benefits to them in a number of areas, but science have been slow to research them. Many of the insights about them from users and researchers aren't taken seriously to fund more scientific research. I love science, but it feels like the institutions for research are regressive and not so open mind sometimes.

Vikings were not a people tho, norsefolk, the people in the north. Viking was just the men sailing out to raid. And also, vikings didn't really plunder that much more than anyone else, its just that they were fearsom and very good at it

Cod Liver oil isn't a health invention. It was just one more way to preserve a food source. Everything was preserved one way or another. When this oil was first invented there was no medical meaning behind it. And then, pretty much all oils or preserved liquids were said to be miraculous and good for you in a way or another. This is a basic behavior in any self sufficient society.

I can imagine inland people had poor survival, so sons and daughters of coastal people moved to take advantage of the available land. They had grown up with cod liver oil, and come to like it like British people love Marmite and Australians love Vegemite. So although they moved away from the coast, they continued taking it, and so prospered. I just made this up, but I like it.

Because the necessity for promoted d vitamin levels in the north, "god" created through evolution a species that thrives in those environments, and this has been happening for million of years i presume. Geniological data is a way of encoding knowledge, mythology is what you described as "proto-science", thus theology is the basis of science...

Good theory on how the Vikings created their tradition and culture to consume cot, but mine is that secrets for survival were pass on from old generations, for the Vikings was this secrete what made them the greatest and powerful culture in the north, that’s the power of information!! This stuff It’s really crazy

Was blood letting entirely harmful? The YouTube channel What I've Learned made a video that included an idea about how blood letting may hav have been a beneficial way to lower iron levels

Πριν 3 μήνες
Hassan Abuabed
Hassan Abuabed

7:47 *NOT TRUE* I enjoyed the vedio but allow me to disagree. Blood letting was also a useful practice at it's time. Don't take it from me see YouTube What I've Learned. *Further explanation below.* he explained it really well (1million subscriptions ) at min 8 into the vedio. https://youtu.be/1MH2ZKt35K4 *If you don't want to watch the vedio* or it's to complex. I'll explain you why blood letting is also a traditional practice just like cod drink, well similar to the lack of sunlight. Agriculture lead to accumulation of iron ( similar to how Virdasium explain in his vedio that agriculture lead to less on Cod fish in the Vikings diet). So agriculture in the Europeans made them full of iron What I've Learned further explains why lack of hem iron which found in meat makes vegetarianns store more regular iron found in plant based dites like agriculture which causes a disease "that I forgotten the name of". And so what's the solution you may ask. Most women don't have that disease since they are "blood leting" in thier periods. Hince the solution to most men to that desirse is donate blood. Or *BLOOD LETTING* This matter made me develop my understanding of genetic and tradition, making my live a way more satisfying and fullfilling. Good luck
