Lol picks Katana because its literally one of the only swords that makes no noise because of the material of the scabbard, if it was metal it would.

Let's face it, real fights are boring, even among trained masters real fights are sloppy, short, and not that great. If you watched Captain America fight the Red Skull or Qui-Gon Jin vs Darth Maul in a real non-choreographed fight you'd be walking out of the theatre halfway through the fight

As a HEMA practioner, the thing I find the most cringeworthy in movies is the last point in the vid: how they use theirs swords like clubs. The only thing that needs to go as fast as possible is the point, this is what is sharp on a blade (the rest is almost blunt in comparison), and the only thing that actually needs momentum. You can achieve this momentum with a good work from your forearms and wrists, you don't need to commit your whole chest with wide arm swings and definitely shouldn't. The biggest offender is the "peasant's strike", which is everywhere in movies: a huge, overcommitted downward swing from overhead. It's the way only a peasant would fight, and too many movie knights fight like this :P (hint: it's super easy to read and parry!)

During my training with a katana I was made very aware that a sword duel lasted for a few seconds and not minutes. Iato is pretty much kill the opponent with one cut as you draw the sword from the scabbard

The best account of sword fighting from two thousand years ago comes from Arabian historians. Back then historians would attend battles and write detailed accounts of what happens. I've read some of these accounts. It is clear to me from these accounts that there were different fighting styles. Some fighters for example would move constantly between enemies never sticking to one enemy. Others would stick to one enemy until that one enemy is defeated before they move on to the next one. Another way of understanding sword fighting was from teachings given by fighters from the time. One such example is from one of the greatest fighters of the time from the Arabian peninsula. I will refrain from naming him here. In his teachings his says "when I begin battle I look at the apposing army before we charge. I spot any man standing at the furthest back of the apposing army. My aim becomes for me to reach him. When we charge, I charge towards him and remove every man that stands in my way to reaching him. I clear everyone in my way to this one man that is standing at the back of the apposing army." Another one of his teachings is that "I have never defeated an enemy before he defeated himself for me". He said this in reference to men being so fearful of him that they would be defeated before he even began sparring them....in one battle a historian from an enemy army cited him as him having killed 65 out of a total of 120 men killed in a battle...

uhh. in any greek phalanx they primarily used their spears for thrusting Not their swords. their swords were for versatility and getting around the opponents shields since the "O" rounded shape of the shield was meant to deflect their sword thrusts or redirect them. the spears (using the guiding notches of the shields in front of them ) helped create a strong mechanism to thrust into the enemy shields. so while swords could pierce, they were also incredibly viable weapons to slash with as well. especially if you wanted to catch the occasional exposed toes/fingers of the enemy
