The best account of sword fighting from two thousand years ago comes from Arabian historians. Back then historians would attend battles and write detailed accounts of what happens. I've read some of these accounts. It is clear to me from these accounts that there were different fighting styles. Some fighters for example would move constantly between enemies never sticking to one enemy. Others would stick to one enemy until that one enemy is defeated before they move on to the next one. Another way of understanding sword fighting was from teachings given by fighters from the time. One such example is from one of the greatest fighters of the time from the Arabian peninsula. I will refrain from naming him here. In his teachings his says "when I begin battle I look at the apposing army before we charge. I spot any man standing at the furthest back of the apposing army. My aim becomes for me to reach him. When we charge, I charge towards him and remove every man that stands in my way to reaching him. I clear everyone in my way to this one man that is standing at the back of the apposing army." Another one of his teachings is that "I have never defeated an enemy before he defeated himself for me". He said this in reference to men being so fearful of him that they would be defeated before he even began sparring them....in one battle a historian from an enemy army cited him as him having killed 65 out of a total of 120 men killed in a battle...

uhh. in any greek phalanx they primarily used their spears for thrusting Not their swords. their swords were for versatility and getting around the opponents shields since the "O" rounded shape of the shield was meant to deflect their sword thrusts or redirect them. the spears (using the guiding notches of the shields in front of them ) helped create a strong mechanism to thrust into the enemy shields. so while swords could pierce, they were also incredibly viable weapons to slash with as well. especially if you wanted to catch the occasional exposed toes/fingers of the enemy

I'd have to disagree with you about Aragorn's fight. While half swording is basically the most efficient means of killing an armored opponent, and is effective, it's NOT a good idea when dealing with a group of enemies and you are their only target. Aragorn did a smart thing in that fight, he pulled out a dagger for stabbing at gaps in their armor in his non dominant hand while using the sword to keep opponents at bay. Not the safest or smartest move possible, but safer than half swording when a group of attackers is bearing down on you

Every movie sword fight makes concessions in order to get the shot and tell the story. it's not about the fight itself, but about moving the story along. Stage combat also has a very large safety element built in to the choreography that affects the realistic look of a fight....it's a necessity. You want a realistic sword fight? Watch Olympic-style fencing...we're actually TRYING to hit each other there.

Have you seen the classic samurai film "Sword of Doom?" That film, above all others, (even it's contemporaries) was far, FAR superior, in terms of realistic, and actual sword techniques, and tactics. (what's even more unique, is that one sees both the protagonists method and the counter to said method in great detail.) Just a thought.

They actually do make that sound with a metal scabbard, Japanese always use wood. Metal is much more precious in ancient Japan. It’s also more sensitive to moisture. Wood won’t dull the blade but metal will adding to the history around Japanese sharpness and cutting power. European swordsman with metal scabbards would be dulling the blade every time you unsheathed it but a wood scabbard if over soaked could actually make the sword become stuck if it wasn’t perfectly engineered. Scabbards in Japan were often discarded or used as a secondary lever they were not as permanent as European scabbards which were either metal or wood secured with leather. Ironically you can make that metal sound with mall katanas, I used to do it all the time with the surgical steel blades. You don’t want surgical steel folks you want spring steel, spring steel is even better than the authentic 2layer method of old Japanese swords. You can bend a spring steel sword in ways that would crack most other blades in half.
