This is one of the most important videos you will watch in your life.  Not for the people who are speaking (Neither of whom I have strong feelings for either way), and not for the content.  What is important about this video is how two people, who have very different views, respectfully exchange ideas and learn from one another.  When I was younger this is how the intellectual leaders in our society behaved.    Presently, people engage in what I call a “No quarter” form of debating.  They want to be 100% right and reign total victory over an opponent.  While this strategy can be appropriate in war or a baseball game it does a disservice to humanity when applied to debate.A winner takes all attitude means you discount everything that your opponent finds relevant.  Not only that, you then demonize your opponent and attempt to exclude them from modern society.  Banishment of a group of people only sets up future generations of extremism.  Read - The Fourth Turning by Neil Howe and William Strauss.  It is one of the most important books on how history repeats itself in a somewhat predictable manner.      The point of debate is to learn something from your opponent you never knew.  To learn humility by admitting your mistakes.  To advance as a person by using the power of self-reflection (One of the key components in the recipe for success). To make friends and allies in new spaces.  To be an agent of change because you are reasonable.  Change comes about because reasonable people have reasonable conversations.  Compliance happens when one person dominates another.  This gives the false appearance of change.  Those that are dominated will turn on their oppressor the moment they believe it can be done.  Find leaders who speak like those in the video.  Stay clear of domination and exclusion and those that promote it.  It is a busted flush.

Hunting isn't Kosher. Prey's death is usually painful.  Joe can get his animal protein from small, Kosher farmers. Very good reason for hunting, spiritual, etc. but when an elk, dead or alive, is removed from nature it is one less elk for scavengers and wolves who need it to stay alive... Hunting fees to create wildlife preserves to have a place to hunt. Forgive me, but it's a little like an orphanage selling nude pictures of it's children to pedophiles... One last thing. Too damn easy to get a hunting license. Few years back a woman in Maine was killed in her backyard because a hunter mistook her white mittens for a whitetail deer. No charges … A friend of mine has a freezer full of venison. Police call him when a deer gets hit by a car. Get on the list, Joe. One last thing, get Joe Hutto on your show.

Yes if everyone hunted we'd wipe out wildlife, but we wouldn't have the population we do nowadays without the industrialization of food production which in many ways is far more unethical IMO. For example CAFO, chemical fertilizers, treating soil as an inert medium, chemical pesticides causing cancer, preservatives in food greatly lengthening shelf life, etc. I could go on and on. Growing your own food and hunting your own food is far more ethical and moral. Sure you may be able to afford grass raised beef, and organically grown local produce but those methods haven't saturated the market to the point where they're affordable or even available to all people, and with the vast majority of humans not even having access to enough land to grow their own food and hunt their own wild game, most are stuck relying on these immoral systems to survive. It's sad. So maybe there lies an opportunity to appeal to a higher sense of empathy as he stated, preventing him from ever being able to hunt. You made some great points there Joe.

I hope your judgment is backed up by a vegan diet. If you eat any meat that is packaged in the refrigerator section of the grocery store, all clean, butchered, and in plastic, well...What does that say about you? You're fine eating an animal that lived in hell, and was butchered in horror, and you think that is fine. Sorry. I haven't eaten meat since I was 15, more than 30 years, and I respect hunters MUCH more than people who criticize hunters but love a nice clean steak from the grocery store. So what if they take a photo with an animal they kill? Why is that more offensive than eating an animal that lived in hellish conditions its entire life, only to die in a terrible and terrifying condition. Hunting is harder than stuffing a corpse in your shopping cart! IS it not? Do you have any idea the difficulty of trailing an animal, killing it in the natural habitat (as opposed to in a shit show slaughter house), and then not only make a clean kill, but tote the animal back home, butcher it, and prepare it so it will last throughout the season? I bet you don't. Unless you are a vegan, in which case, I commend you, then you need to shut the fuck up and realize that hunting is more humane than a slaughter house. It is certainly more humane than the factory farms. And anyone who gets their meat that was deserves to post a pic or gloat over their accomplishment. Much harder to bring home venison from the woods than it is to bring a T-bone steak from the store. Right? I think anybody can see that.

A good hunter manages his game. Feeds them, let's them grow from year to year, waits till they are fully mature and then you kill them. Never kill an animal unless you are going to eat.

Πριν 6 ημέρες
Amy Kline
Amy Kline

I think not. And anyone who thinks hunting is worse than a factory farm is an idiot. Even tribes hunted when they weren't hungry. THINK! WHy would someone hunt if they weren't starved? Well, maybe because it is more humane than a slaughterhouse, or maybe because they prefer meat not riddled with hormones and fed sawdust. Or maybe they simply can't afford to pay $15 a pound for steaks. It is actually not our business. If you eat meat and bash hunters, you are willfully ignorant. As if the poor little piggies who give you bacon are thrilled that they spend their entire lives not even being able to turn around. As if the beef on your table had a better life than the elk shot by a hunter. Not only that, but when do you think men hunted for food a thousand years ago, when they were already starved? NO. They persevered, so that their families could have food when it became scarce. You are dumb if you think humans only ever hunted when they were hungry. Try again. I am sure you can find some other way to bash the people of my country. I'm sure you are practically starving to death with the internet access that allowed you to make that comment. If you have internet, you aren't starving. So shut the fuck up about my country, dumb-ass

Joe mentions the market hunting nightmare of the late 1800s and early 1900s. . .man. Have you guys ever seen the pictures of the MOUNTAINS of American Bison skulls? Holy fuck. It's enough to make anyone with just a shred of humanity well up. Even if it doesn't make you emotional, it'll leave you asking how we could have been so fkin dumb about understanding the consequences of killing anything and everything we could for food, without ever considering what we would do if we killed ALL of the food. Just google 'buffalo skull pile' - and then you can see why the native Americans were never really worried about the white man wiping them out directly, they were worried the white man would wipe out the food chain and ALL OF US would be fucked. They were a little off I would say, turns out we were a little more of a direct thought than they anticipated, but they knew, some way or another, we would destroy their way of life and there was nothing they could do about it.

Πριν 14 ημέρες
Amy Kline
Amy Kline

Those buffalo were killed for sport, nothing more. Men would ride trains through an area and pick off buffalo for fun. And if you actually think the Native Americans never wasted food, you live in a fantasy. Archeological digs have found that they ran entire herds off of cliffs, and could not possibly have used every bit of the buffalo they killed, as evidenced by the corpses piled in the dig. No, Native Americans weren't the perfection of humanity. They raped, killed, tortured, and took slaves, just like every other culture on the planet. And the sure as hell didn't care if they ran 10,000 buffalo off a cliff, when they could not use even half of them. I am not saying they didn't have a superior connection to the land and ecology. Of course they did, but it was out of necessity, not honor or reverence for the environment. The primitivistic ideal that we project on to "natives" is a joke. See how they took to gunpowder and horses? The Plains native Americans did things that we would shudder to see. Life is not a Disney movie. In reality, all cultures on the planet have always had an element that we can look at as debauchery, but that was life. Do you honestly think they were consciously respecting the earth? Or were they respecting what they had to to survive? Just like everybody else.

The main reason they are able to have a civil conversation is because they are face to face. Not saying these 2 in particular would have a hate battle behind a screen or phone cause lets face it they are both civil people to begin with. 50% of the population are not civil, can not appreciate another persons beliefs or passions and are....well...just ignorant. For example just read some of the comments below. I truly believe that this will eventually change but its going to take 30 years before the majority of people to catch up with evolution of mankind. These 2 are a perfect example of evolution.

Joe's trying to paint a picture of the responsible hunter, but that's fiction. Joe's not a scientist, he's just cynical as his nature as a comedian. The average hunter doesn't think for one moment about the ecosystem. And some of those animals being hunted are keystone in their environment, the elimination of one can have dire effects. Even an alligator, a species that fills the Everglades, has over 400 species that depend on it's normal activities even in it's old age. Forget it's off spring, where's the justification of destroying all those other species of flora and fauna? Be as polite as possible, but conservation is a cute word for a money scheme that eventually dies off with the species.

It's a good rationale but hunting is no longer tenable for the majority of people. So, good for him, but not a big issue. The issues are humane treatment, genetic manipulations, healthy conditions, ending the abomination of hunger, and developjng food alternatives. Russell, how do you think about abortion? Now you've had children..when do they experience pain, consciousness, pleasure. When do they acquire personhood? The only time I can understand it is in ectopic pregnancies, very high risk pregnancies at a very early stage, and morning after pill. Nowadays, they have abortion mill on the go , for profit, poorly regulated, its gruesome and dangerous to women's health.Plus, there is trade in the products of abortion, for human cells, genetic testing, use in medical treatments. I think it's a crime against humanity, even if in desperation.

This Brit blows my mind, hunting gathering is human spirit , human nature. We are programmed naturally that way and modern society deprograms the human from what we are naturally. Look at the tribes that have zero or first contact with modern society that live in the amazon, without hunting they would die, it’s 24/7 for them and the only way they survive, therefore hunting is 100% necessary. Russell is just so rich and privileged he doesn’t have to hunt, if he was left in the Amazon he would either learn to hunt quick or die.
