Myself being referred to as "they" is quite amusing indeed. I have cognition of both legal a societal expectations, consequences and normality. I do not consider myself ignorant, there is much work to be done in order to operate amongst "you" however, this task, whilst tiresome indeed, may be accomplished.

What about Aspergers? I thought years back that my husband ticked every box for NPD. Except one. He cared. Not always...not when annoyed or focused on something else etc. But he would be very sad over other people's situations. The closer they were to him though, the further away he would be able to take himself from it. He still is like that. But he goes from all that care to complete hate and punishment to his family if we don't do what he expects. Melt downs have included banging his head on a brick wall and then lying down in the garden for hours, lying in front of a police car shouting at them to take him away (which they refused to! lol), smashing our home up...until I learned to call the police in time and learned to stand up to him myself which seems to have prevented that level of destruction since. But he isn't diagnosed with Aspergers. We split up once and I told him what I had found out and how he fitted Asergers so he went to the mental health team (because I think he wanted to restore our marriage) and told the assessor. She said, "oh I highly doubt it!" and wouldn't test him for it!! I was so bewildered at her when he told me! He had never admitted to anything before and this one time he actually agreed that it felt like he had something and that stupid woman didn't take notice of him!! So he wouldn't go back and he won't go to the doctors even now for it. He won't talk about it but recently he did actually ask again what it was. I told him and he just looked sad and said, "Hmm". But he is intelligent and overly aware of certain things while being oblivious to others. E.g. smells ...put perfume on in the house and you will find him opening every window in the house and cursing furiously! I had to make him stop putting teatowels all over the sides in the kitchen to save the work surfaces!! etc etc. But he can decorate mansions because he is so fine at it. Hates it but is brilliant at it. He can be totally and deliberately cruel at times, horrendously brutal in his wording of how he feels about you and the way you look, and a total control freak...micromanaging everything! A polarity responder too on many occasions. e.g. You want to watch a comedy he wants a drama, you want a movie he wants a series, he asks if you want a drink so you say you want coffee... he only feels like making a tea, you want today he wants tomorrow...always always like this!! Its even hard to play him at his own game with this because he knows us so well he can tell when we are asking for what we don't really want!! Sheesh!! LOL!!

I learned a lot listening to explain the differences. My ex is narcissist and I didn’t know this until after I married him. He loved to make me doubt myself. He would call me crazy and say @ I didn’t tell you that!”. I felt like he was trying to make me have a nervous breakdown. He was so cruel. But I was not as weak as he tried to make me think I was. I got so tired of his crap and started speaking up. He hated that. I am divorced now and my life is so much better. So glad I got away! So glad.

What about those who fit the criteria of an extreme narcissist but like denial, a good portion of their thinking, rationalisation etc is just as subconscious as typical denial? Obviously denial happens on a subconscious level therefore without the "permission" of the ego on a conscious level (or it would be something other than denial).

I am so glad that I found your YouTube channel. I pass it along to whoever I think could benefit from it or who could pass it on themselves to someone in need. I have learned so much from you. Your videos are always presented well, are the perfect length, and keep my attention. I was having a hard time trying to decide if this person was actually a narcissist or if he was just militaristic from his career in the Army. I just kept educating myself with all your videos and really paid attention to his actions or lack there of and behaviors, I listened to his words. Mostly, I, I, I , I all the time. Or rather Me, Myself and I, are all that matter. The information I received helped me to finally see and remove myself from the situation, which was never going to change. It was hard to do. I had tried many times only to be hoovered back in. The last time I think I did it successfully, since I was armed with the knowledge I received from you, I know it is never going to change and I deserve so much better. When I finally knew, I could finally be done! For the first time, I feel at peace with my decision. He always kept me in a state of uncertainty or turmoil. Of course, there are things I miss or moments I recall that we're good, but those were few and far between. I always had to walk on eggshells and cater to his ego. He expected everything from me and gave so little in return. He always abandoned me when I needed him the most. Every time! Expected me to drop everything to help him but never helped me in return or if he did, let me know how inconvenient it was. I am so afraid of making a bad choice again in the future. I don't trust my judgment now. My hope is to keep listening to you so I will see this type of person for who they are long before investing time and energy. I am heartbroken though because I lost all access to the dog I loved so much. She was just the best. That part really gets me, it causes me so much sorrow. But he used her to control me and situations, so I had to say enough is enough. She was my ESA. She was a huge part of why I stayed and ultimately the reason why I had to leave too. I miss her so much. I never met a dog so in tune to mine and his emotions. She knew I was getting stressed out before I did and was right there trying to alleviate it. It was truly amazing. She is amazing. Thank you so much for taking the time to create these informative, well thought out videos. They have enlightened me so much. You and your work are much appreciated. Jackie, from Santa Cruz, California.

My oldest son was diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder with Sociopathic tendencies at around age 14. I have read that these two disorders are caused by nurture rather than nature. I don't know what I did wrong with him, but my other two sons are not like that at all. My middle son and I both had to bear the brunt of my oldest sons rages. I did my best to protect my middle son, but we have both ended up with PTSD. My youngest is autistic, but he's just a really happy-go-lucky kid. Even he developed some anxiety. Fortunately, my oldest is 19 and hasn't lived with us for nearly a year. He was also diagnosed with high-functioning autism when he was 3. There are a lot of videos out there that make me feel as though I did something wrong while raising him, but the truth is..... he never actually liked me and made it known since he was about 2 years old. Once, he actually pushed me out of a room. Literally. We were visiting my parents. My mother and my husband (son's father) were sitting in the kitchen and my oldest was in there with them. I came to the doorway to speak to my mom and my son walked over and shoved me back through the doorway. Not kidding. He was born angry. Screaming like a four month old, red in the face ANGRY! His dad and I have a good relationship. I have a good relationship with my other two kids. He was never abused, physically, mentally or emotionally. I always did my best for him, just like I do with my other two kids. He just never liked me. I don't know what I did wrong. Now that he's an adult and doesn't live with us, some of the tension has eased. I would like very much to mend the relationship but I don't know how. Do you have any theories or suggestions???

Hi Heather.  I'd pull back on the idea that NPD or Sociopathy is mostly nurture. That is a long debated topic and there is no clear consensus. I have a brother who is a forensic psychologist who tests the worst of the criminals, and while there are certainly environmental issues in play, he and I both agree that there can be a strong inborn tendency.  Don't heap the guilt all onto your shoulders.    Dr. C

Can you answer something for me? As a small child, there was a very nasty divorce between my parents and I ended up with (obviously) the extreme narcissist. She had narcissistic traits coming out of her ears and was very vindictive but I understand that goes along with other things. She also exhibited traits of delusional disorder, and Factor 2 sociopathy. My question is, can a person be both delusional and a sociopath?

The distinctions between sociopaths, narcissists and psychopaths are meaningless. The important thing is that it is not possible to have a fulfilling relationship with any one of the three because with each their own well being is always the cardinal factor. In fact, it's not important that such people are defined by their psychiatric nomenclature. The important thing to know is that they must be avoided at all costs because they only care about themselves. The shared characteristic is lack of empathy towards the people that suffer because of them.

I am wondering what kind of person is one who lies about stuff they don't even have to lie about. Who is a thief. Has a bad temper that can get violent. Feels he is better than other people. I don't want to assume the worst, but what you talked about seems to be hitting pretty close. I have known this person since they were a child and the behavior started showing up around the time they turned 6. Can these personality traits be inherited?

This is great for people to know the difference. The biggest problem comes when the psychopath is they are allowed to have and raise children. My mother was a true psychopath in every sense. While I did everything I could to not be anything like my mother not everyone can make the change. I have one sister who is just like my mom, she is a psychopath. I have one sister who is a sociopath. I have a daughter who is a narcissist and another who is a psychopath. My other sister is more like me just not as open. I really feel for them all. It would seem that is goes on in the same family which is really sad. It is almost like a disease never completely stops.

Why are you amazed? Lots of people with NPD are very, very good at putting a mask on, looking what they are not: good persons. One can easily fall in the trap, and once you are in that trap, you feel like you live on another planet and breaking out becames very difficult. Especially the so called "shy" narcissist, is very dangerous, like a Cobra. I know something about it, 20 years of marriage with one of "those". I did not get completely crazy because I studied psychology at University, therefore I had some tools to understand what was going on, but he tricked me anyway. @SpiritBreath&Life Yes, I hear what you say. Whilst we are in this world we see and experience more and more the damage and hurt that many people can inflict on others. It seems the "male" of the species inflicts one type of hurt/pain (maybe due to the way they are put together) and the women do different things (such as spite/jelousy etc). But it is all very nasty - the way many people behave. And although I have [actually] met a "good" man/human being some years back (of which we are still together) I still realise (from all I'd seen before) that there is still far more bad in this world than good or decent. I have really seen what people can do (from a very early age). And just because I met someone who is different and more caring - it doesn't mean I have "forgotten" that the vast majority of people out there are still the same as they ever were. And I still think of those who are being made victims. But these days I much prefer "animals" because most of them do not behave in this way, and they are innocent.

@JungleCat - you said; "Every single trait described here is of the vast majority of men in this world (and maybe some women too)" Ummm, I don't know what you are looking at or thinking when it comes to women, but I don't think any trained professional (or any of the rest of us) would say these traits tend more toward one gender or the other. These sick people are everywhere, of every age, every gender, every socioeconomic strata - and their numbers are growing. All we can do is educate ourselves and pray that God would deliver us from wicked and unreasonable people. - Amen...
