All of these problems are evident when you even saw one season of "The Good Wife". Even though maybe even them don't portray it as bad as it really is sometimes, because they only focus on Chicago and not on Louisiana or other local prosecutors. To be honest, as a European I am happy that I am, because I know that if I got into conflict with the law, I would neither fear the death penalty, an unfair trial or an innocent conviction out of a lack of options because of a lack of public defenders and fair prosecutors. Here in Germany for example we actually prosecute every single crime, there are no plea deals, either you did it or you didn't, but punishments are rather mild and centered on rehabilitation instead of being "tough on crime", because neither prosecutors nor judges are voted on, they are bureaucrats who are appointed, whose job description is following the law faithfully instead of securing convictions. Racism exists in Germany as well, but its biases are rarely harming the poor or unpopular minorities, because you can't really abuse the system easily as it's common in the US. Therefore our justice system rarely ruins lives of the poor and minorities as thoroughly as the US has historically done especially to black Americans. Our crime rates are pretty low and rehabilitation rates are much higher than in the US, felons are still allowed to vote and the prison population isn't high and therefore not expensive. We also don't have the death penalty which you have to abolish if you want to join the European Union.

The United State's "justice" system is really the final attempt at justice. A real justice system would engage the "at-risk" or the system itself before it get's them. Its not a justice system its a legal system at best. Look around the world and see how countries like Germany have started making prison systems rehabilitating (actually correctional) instead of just a punishment for the crime.

One of things about these scumbags that pisses me off the most is when they say that their job is to get convictions. That is NOT your fucking job. Your job is to convict the person who is guilty of the crime. Every second you spend going after an innocent person and trying to coerce them into pleading guilty so that you can increase your conviction rate is time that is wasted and is allowing the guilty person to roam free and get further and further away from facing justice. If anybody's interested, there are quite a few videos on youtube that show how people from every level of the system, including police officers, lawyers and judges, that do everything they can to get innocent people to confess, a lot of it amounting to what is essentially trickery. There are, no doubt, some great people in all of these positions, but that doesn't excuse the fundamental flaws that are inherent in the system, and that a lot of it simply boils down to trying to increase conviction rates regardless of who's convicted.

Excuse me while I lock myself in my house for the remainder of my life, since you never know when someone will get a stick up their a** and then you're on death row or something, which is just too freaking terrifying. Whatever happened to peoples' jobs being about doing the right thing....

Ok prosecutors getting away for witholding evidence that would have been favourable to the defense THAT'S BULLSHIT!!! That's a FUCKING FEDERAL LEVEL OFFENSE!!!! AND PROSECUTORS SHOULD HAVE MORE OVERSIGHT!!! you shouldn't shoot for convictions just because you want to!!!!! Let the evidence speak for the itself to garner a conviction NOT TO ADVANCE YOUR CAREER!!

That whole "plead guilty" even though you are innocent just kills me. I saw a case 12 years ago in court. It was a he said/she said thing. She said the guy grabbed her arm and pulled her hand toward his penis (her hand never actually made contact, according to her, but supposedly he did pull her hand toward his groin). He said that the incident never happened and that she was mad because he wouldn't go out with her. His lawyer told him that if he plead guilty, he would get a couple days jail time, a fine, and go on the sex offenders list. If he plead innocent but was found guilty by the judge, he would get a year jail time, name on sex offender list etc., and that the judge didn't seem to like black people. At the time, this black guy was 24, the girl was 19, white, blond. The guy stuck with his innocent plea. The judge stuck it to him. 1 year in jail. Several hundred dollars (I don't remember the total) in court costs, and on the sex offenders list for life for 4th degree criminal sexual conduct. He was screwed from the get go. Apparently there doesn't have to be any evidence. I really do not think this guy was guilty. But to plead guilty when you are innocent--that is just wrong, and our court systems should NOT be set like that. Our justice system is simply not just.

obviously the ace attorney games are a highly fictionalized portrayal of the legal system and are deliberately set in a dystopian near-future, but after watching this it kind of feels like they need to be mandatory "reading" for law school???? because the most morally reprehensible culprits in those games are most often part of the system themselves, and seem to be about on par in terms of morality with what was presented here. seems like a good thing to expose students to before they can get sucked too far into the preestablished culture frankly.

Oliver is lame, like the rest of the lost children of the daily show. His political commentary is 100% left wing textbook, while he obviously have no knowledge, credentials or education on world politics. So why would we bother with the opinions of this buffoon? But it would be almost tolerable if he'd at least talk about the revolting truth when the left should own it. For example, he knows a lot about UK politics and never felt ashamed about criticising UK politicians harshly (tearing up Cameron or Johnson to pieces comes to mind). But when the labor party avoids adopting the required standard definition of anti-Semitism so the heap of bloody anti-Semites that compose large parts of it can go on in their bigoted ways, and when its leader Mr. Corbyn-laden leads the party for years while bluntly supporting Hamas and Hisbollah, and for the last recent weeks is non-apologetic when scandals from several years ago pop up like him placing flowers on the graves of the PLO terrorists that killed Israeli athletes in Germany Olympics, our little buffoon has nothing to say about it. Well I guess national socialists, bigots, terror supporters and scumbags in general are fine as long as they hold the correct opinions. The ones of Oliver.

I have a question and would love some advice. This year my 20 year old son was accused of sexual assault. It’s a long story, so I won’t go into it but we had DNA evidence and the cards were definitely on our side. (He didn’t do anything to harm this girl). We had to get a public defender because a criminal lawyer started at 25000$. My sons defender believed my son, but was totally intimidated by the prosecutor. He was talked into up pleading guilty

I don't see how this gets any better as long as they "tough/weak on crime" meme persists. A prosecutor has more information than anyone in many cases. But if a good prosecutor dropped charges or didn't file often or severe enough they could easily lose their job to some clown who only cares about winning percentages and putting the absolute maximum people behind bars (or in the ground). We may all be able to agree that if we were falsely accused of a crime we'd want the prosecutor that would give us the greatest chance of achieving real justice. But when its not our lives at stake, too many people still just want "tough on crime" at all costs without really considering the catastrophic results.

Honestly, all these elections for DA's Judges, and numerous other officials that run unopposed thanks to voter apathy makes me reconsider pure democracies. I think our founding fathers had it right to make America a Republic rather than having the people decide everything directly. How much easier would it be to prioritize electing local mayors, governors etc and have them appoint judges, DA's etc that fit in line with your values/prioritizes than having elections for all of them? Hell, most Mayors run unopposed and that needs to stop. People need to devote more time to civic duty and elections but we might need also to streamline the entire process to better serve the will of the people.
